Forestville News & Events, December 2018

For years, Earl Stevens made sure the downtown holiday tree was cut, hauled, put up and decorated so we could celebrate our very own town tree lighting. When an indispensable volunteer like that retires, what happens? The Wood and Trappe families knew what to do. They stepped in and have now made this formidable task a fun family and friends’ event where everyone from their darling toddlers to town patron Hal Wood shows up to make it happen.

Forestville News & Events, September 2018 I got a wonderful surprise the other day. Something I get to check off my “Wouldn’t It Be Cool” list. You know, that list that isn’t quite Bucket-List caliber such as seeing the Northern Lights (not yet) or jumping out of an airplane (done). No, this cool surprise was local and tied to Forestville History. I got to actually see one of those rare “Forestville Chairs” made by the Faudre Chair Factory, which put Forestville on the map in the late 1800s.

Forestville News & Events, August 2018

It’s a tale of two Sean’s. One a longtime resident, all around nice guy and frequent customer at Sunshine Roasters coffee shop downtown.

Forestville News & Events, July 2018, Summer's Here

Special July 4th Farmers Market
I’ve got a great idea for you. Kick off summertime in Forestville by coming to the 4th of July Farmers Market (Wednesday). Think pig roast, beer and wine, yummy food and bands! Joy Ride plays from 12-3, then Dog Gone Honey’s from 3-7PM. Bring enough money to buy the usual fresh produce, gourmet olive oils, breads, crafts and treats.

Forestville News & Events, March 2018

Have you done one of those DNA tests yet? Any surprises? I was sort of hoping I’d have something interesting show up in mine. But science tells me I’m still mostly Irish. The traditions from my childhood have formed me. The songs my mother sang doing the dishes. The lullabies to put us to sleep. The food. The folk dances. The proud green ribbon in my hair on St. Patrick’s Day. Generation after generation, firmly rooted traditions from County Cork Ireland were a huge part of my life. I always felt I had the “Luck of the Irish.” Maybe it’s just the gift of gab!

Where Do Gifts Come From?

I have a great story of a gift.  Years ago the Chamber requested money from the Community Fund to pick up trash in downtown Forestville.  The grant paid JD Kawai, famous about town for his bikes and friendly banter, to take on this task. He did a great job of making the town spiffy, no more piles of cigarette butts or bits of flotsam here and there.  We looked like someone cared.

Forestville News & Events, October 2017

I got lost in Forestville the other day. I overshot my intended turn. Ended up in an unfamiliar neighborhood. As I drove through I was struck at how different this section of Forestville was from mine.

Some of us live in sweet neighborhoods with sunny gardens. Some of us are on ridgetops overlooking a vineyard, the river, or both. Some of us cling to hillsides hoping our trees hold the soil during winter rains. We all call Forestville home.

It’s interesting to explore our town’s neighborhoods. The more we understand each other, the better community we create.

Forestville News & Events, September 2017

The call came at 3 am. A neighbor thought we might want to know. The house directly above us was on fire. We stumbled out the back to witness a roaring blaze 30’ up the hill. My mind froze. What to rescue…photos, laptop, grandma’s quilt? Embers rained down. My attempt to wet our roof with a garden hose felt pathetic.

The Gazette's New Forestville Columnist Lucy Hardcastle's First Article

Special Addition
To all Forestvillians (and those who wish they were). What an honor to take over writing this column from Richard Naegle. It was Richard who got me involved in local projects in the first place.

His enthusiasm for all things Forestville was catching. Volunteer he said, you’ll like it. He was right. I’ve met some of the best people on the planet thanks to his encouragement. Because of that I feel a part of this community, and that feels good.

According to those whose grandparents pioneered this town, and you know who you are, I’m a latecomer. In October of ’89, in my 40s and newly divorced, I was looking for a new start.
