FPA Report: Town Square, Green Valley Creek Project, April 2005
by Richard Naegle, FPA President, 2005
Town Square: Plans for the proposed Town Square continue to be developed by the Downtown Planning Committee of the Forestville Planning Association.
At our Town Meeting on this subject over 22 suggestions were made for possible incorporation into the Square. The Committee has summarized these into five central elements: a water element, a gazebo or band stand, walking path/labyrinth, sitting places, and a visual barrier to the road that includes a portal.
This month several people are submitting schematic designs based on these elements. They will be reviewed by the Committee in relation to the plot plan (scale drawing of the topography) which is being provided by Orrin Thiessen.
The Committee hopes to come up with recommendations for the community to review and discuss in a Town Meeting this summer. In the meantime, if you are interested in the development of this project, you may visit The Package Store in Town to see the plot plan and the schematic designs that have been submitted so far.
Ask to see the FPA file at the front counter. (Thank you, Holly!) Also, you are cordially invited to attend the Committee meetings on the second Monday of each month at 6:00 pm at 6525A First Street (next to the Bargain Store).
Green Valley Creek Project: Cam Perry has asked the Forestville Planning Association to be the non-profit sponsor of the second stage of the Green Valley Creek restoration project.
The first phase with grants for $90,000 has been ably administered by the Forestville Chamber of Commerce and is almost complete. The $50,000 grant proposal for the second phase has been submitted and has an excellent chance of being approved.
The Project will restore sections of the lower creek, both improving existing and creating new habitat for Coho salmon and steelhead. Cooler, deep water pools will be created using weirs and log structures. Small boulder deflectors will also be installed to protect banks and slow winter flows.
Eroding banks will be gently sloped, partially rocked, and then replanted with native willows and alders to stabilize and reestablish the overhead canopy of the Creek. Through involvement of El Molino High School students, a Life of a Stream handbook will be produced and distributed to other watershed restoration organizations, agencies, and the community at large.
As envisioned by Cam, this project will continue to bring our community together: gravel miners, agricultural producers, business owners, school children, and local residents — all working together for a wonderful common goal.
There has been an initial meeting of a new FPA committee to oversee this Project. People at the last Town Meeting who signed a list of those interested in water projects were invited. But the Creek needs more volunteers to help it!
If you would like to participate in this wonderful community Project and/or join the FPA Committee which will implement it, please contact Sig Anderman at Sig.Anderman@EllieMae.com.
